I find it much harder to get started on a larger task then on a small one. Generally. This seems obvious. But why? And can I use this to my advantage?

Few in my social circle have a cleanly segregated part of their lives dedicated to work. This is partly due to a lack of respect for people’s time and life. But more significantly there are second jobs, additional projects, and often unpaid work to, vaguely, further one’s career.
I find myself in a situation between the work I have to do and the work I should be doing. And sometimes these are indistinguishable and thus the source of my conflict.
How often do we find ourselves in a situation where we cannot get our work done because we have too much to do? The real tragedy begins when we cannot even get started with work we should do because of the work we need to do. Few professionals have a clean, linear career path, where one thing follows the other and everything is in a neat, ordered and predictable sequence. We are forever grasping at opportunities and chipping away at commitments. Soon our careers resemble a tree more then a path. The result? We spread ourselves to thin. The joy leaves our passion and digging away at the mountain of our responsibilities becomes a chore.
It is the parable of the pebbles in a jar. The large ones should go in first. Once the jar is full of sand, there no longer is any space for pebbles. The question is: when is something we must do something we should not do? What are we doing to stay where we are that prevents us from progressing further? We now come to the crux. Fear, uncertainty and doubt. And their buddies: risk, danger and adventure.
Ultimately, a life not lived is a life not lived. Where are we going if we are staying here?

Perhaps blogging on the road will make productive use of the odd moment here and there. I’m already cramming audio books into ever minute not requiring my full attention. Including traveling.
Sometimes I miss thinking time. Especially when I review my creative and original output over the past years. A worrying trend! Even my attempts at dedicated thinking time seem to fail these days. What does it take? Perhaps a month on a desert island? It’d get me sun burnt and probably a raft built. A creative act of sorts.
Perhaps I have it back to front. Does the thought precede the act, or does the act precede the thought? And when is a thought an idea? And when is an idea creative? And what is a creative idea without the creative act?
At least now I have yet another thing to ponder, before I can get back to thinking…
